We know we should call our federal, state and local representatives on the issues that affect us. Unfortunately, it is soooo easy to let good intentions melt away. Our approach is to make it easy for busy members to give 15 minutes each week to make 3 calls to their federal officials. Every week the team will focus on an issue then email you a suggested script. You then call your reps at your convenience. And by golly we will make sure they know our opinions.
Most of us have never visited our representatives offices, neither locally nor in DC or Harrisburg. We are fortunate that most of
our elected representatives have offices in Lehigh or Berks counties. It is time we started to make political calls of our own.
For far too long progressive voices have sat muted, while the angry and often delusional voices of the conservative right have dominated the air waves.
It is time to show up.
In the article below we looked at the techniques Trump uses to hoodwink America. In a remarkable series of tweets, Elliot Lusztig, @ezlusztig, distilled the essence of why. Why make easily refutable claims?
In this context Trump's bizarre behavior is not madness but a carefully crafted method. Is the constant and at times casual, like it's obviously true, attack on the media - fascist speak for I'm going to muzzle the press just like Putin?
Trump uses four types of statements to manipulate us:
The most insidious of these is gaslighting. According to the Oxford Dictionary: Gaslighting or gas-lighting is a form of manipulation through persistent denial, misdirection, contradiction, and lying in an attempt to destabilize and delegitimize a target. Its intent is to sow seeds of doubt in the targets, hoping to make them question their own memory, perception, and sanity.
The manipulator cynically uses our instincts to trust and to give the benefit of doubt against us. Psycologists have long recognize these techniques and why we keep falling for them. Please read the following introductory article: Gaslighting as a Manipulation Tactic: What It Is, Who Does It, And Why. It is up to us to become aware of gaslighting and not let Trump and his spokespersons to use it without being challenged.
To watch Rachel Maddow's Report, click here. In 2013 the Republican-led Congress changed the laws regarding Voice of America, which had only been allowed to broadcast overseas, to be able to broadcast stateside. After the elections in November, 2016, the Republican-led Congress slipped a last minute revision changing how the VOA was to be governed. Prior to this it was governed by bipartisan panel, now it is to be governed by a CEO that is apppointed by and directly reports to President Trump. Why here? Why is it partisan? How will VOA's $800 million budget be allocated? Will it report the facts or alternative facts? This is too much power in one man's hands.
